Traveltime: Hamburg

Miss Squishy and I have been to Hamburg and had a great weekend there. We spent one afternoon shopping (boots and a blouse) and had dinner at a small greek restaurant in Altona. The next day we went to a black light mini golf course, which was a lot of fun. It was a lovely day, so after having some lunch in town, we went down to the harbour (I just love it there). We looked at the ships, had to take shelter from two rain showers and when the sun came out again, we did a short trip on a boat, before sitting down for some afternoon tea. We then walked to Ottensen where we had dinner in a lovely small bar that served Caipirinha and a very tasty tomatoe soup.

Unfortunately I forgot my camera, so I had to take the photos with my phone and therefore the quality is not so good. I want to show you some pictures anyway.

Traveltime: Bremen

So my sister and I went to Bremen with our Monsters. It was a very nice day and we took many pictures, which is why this post will have more photos than text. Just a list of things we did:

  • walk from the train station across the old moat to a mill
  • spottet a huge fish and a cute duck-house in the moat
  • visited quite a few churches (big and little ones) and sat in a sort of crypt where you were not allowed to talk
  • strolled through the cute Schnoor-Viertel, a quarter of the town with the cutest little alleys, houses and shops
  • blew bubbles at the river Weser
  • ate kebabs and ice cream
  • touched the statue of the Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Bremen Town Musicians) for good luck (read the story of them here)
  • Visited a bonbon factory and bought a glass of bonbons

And here are some impressions of this beautiful day:

It was an absolutely lovely day and we really enjoyed it!

Traveltime: Hannover

Back in July, my sister and I have been travelling Lower-Saxony for some days. One day we went to Hannover, the capital of Lower-Saxony. In the old town, we saw Hanover’s biggest church, the Marktkirche, the old town hall, and the last tower from the city wall that is still standing. Looking down from behind the “Leineschloss”, which currently inhibits the state parliament, we could see the river Leine. The river bank here was quite high, which actually gave the city of Hanover it’s name: When people first settled there in the medieval times, they halled it “am hohen overe” which is very old German and translates to “at the high riverbank”. Over the years, this turned into “Hannovere” and finally into “Hannover”.

Across the river, there was a boot sale on and we saw the famous Nanas, statues made by the french artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Later we walked to the new town hall (which is not quite so new anymore). Inside, there are four models of the city at different times: One from the medievil times (very small and a lot of water), one from just before World War two (pretty big and very nice), one from right after the war (everything destroyed. everything) and one from now (all new and modern). Finally we walked past the small lake behind the town hall to the bigger lake Maschsee. It was a really nice day.

A Trip to the Sea

So my sister and I went travelling Lower-Saxony a bit in July with our monsters. One day we went to Cuxhaven, a small town by the sea. Here the river Elbe flows into the North Sea. It was very nice and sunny, but very windy as well (as it is always by the sea).

When we arrived, the tide was out and the Wadden Sea was visible. It is a natural Park and unique to the coast of the North Sea. Instead of sand there are miles of mud stretching out, in which hundreds of tiny organisms live. It is quite fascinating.

We strolled along the mud and in the sand, walked to the point where the river Elbe flows into the sea, which is marked by a wooden structure, called Kugelbake and then made our way back on the dyke in the wind.

July Travels

Due to all the university stuff I have to do, I won’t be able to travel much (or far) this summer, so I thought of something else instead. You usually go to places that are far away, but who actually travels close to home? And who says that it can’t be interesting there?

Miss Squishy and I will be travelling Lower Saxony (which is the part of Germany where we live) and maybe my sister and Tiana will accompany us. We will travel by train and visit a different town every day (or maybe every other day). The plan is, to get to 5-10 destinations.

London: St. James’s Park and Buckingham Palace

On the second day of our London trip, we went to Buckingham Palace where we saw the changing of the guards. It was incredibly crowded and we had to stand on the bannister to be able to see at least a bit. There was no way of taking proper photos though, so we returned in the afternoon, where we also strolled through beautiful St. James’s Park. Here are a few impressions:

Bubbles at Blackfriars: London along the Thames

Since the weather was really nice on friday afternoon and it was supposed to rain the other days (which it did), we decided to spend some time down at the Thames. We took the tube to Blackfriars and walked across the bridge (which plays an important part in the epilogue of the Mortal Instruments book series which I am obsessed with). Then we walked along the riverside, past the Globe Theatre and many, many people. A man was making huge bubbles for a crowd of kids who jumped up and down, trying to pop them. We walked on the Millennium Bridge to find out if it actually swings (and it does a tiny bit) all the way to the Tower Bridge (which was incredibly crowded) and across it to the Tower.

It was a lovely afternoon outside and we all really enjoyed it!

Harry Potter Studio Tour

The highlight of our London trip was the Warner Brothers Studio Tour of the Harry Potter film studios. Since it was my friend’s birthday and both she and I are huge Harry Potter fans, we decided to go there and had one of the best days ever!

After we watched a short filmclip as an introduction, the screen on which it was shown was lifted up and behind it were the doors to the great hall of Hogwarts. That was incredibly cool. Since it was my friend’s birthday, she was then allowed to open the doors and we entered the great hall. The tourguide talked about it a bit and then asked us about our favourite houses. First up was Hufflepuff (I am totally a Hufflepuff) and as soon as she said it I began cheering, but to my confusion and frustration I was the only person in the entire room showing any reaction. At first I thought What? There are no more Hufflepuffs here? But as soon as the tourguide asked about the other houses it became clear, that the people were simply boring or didn’t care or maybe were not quite into Harry Potter (for whatever reason), because also for the other houses there was not much clapping, even for Gryffindor there were only like three people or so.

Anyway, the tour guide left shortly afterwards and we had time to explore everything. Both of my friends and I loved it, even the one who is not quite so much into Harry Potter. The other friend and I freaked out every couple of minutes because we saw something cool. It is really hard to describe the feling but it was really great to see all the sets and props (which are actually the original ones from the movies). There were puppets wearing costumes, some of them arranged in sets, there were the Hogwarts gate and the kitchen of the Burrow, Hagrids Hut and pieces of the ministry of magic, the dining table from Malfoy Manor, the potions classroom, Borgin and Burke’s, Dumbledores office, the Gryffindoor common room, Harry’s dormitory and so many other things. We saw the Philosopher’s stone, the golden egg, the triwizard cup (which was bigger than I had expected), two versions of the goblet of fire, the deluminator, all of the horcruxes, all of the Quidditch balls, Neville’s remembrall and so many other things.

After that came the bigger sets. Platform 9 3/4 with the Hogwarts Express was probably the most impressive. You could even go inside it and have a look at different cabins which were prepared as in different movies. For example the Prisoner of Azkaban one had windows styled frozen and the mark of a hand on it as well as the bottle in front of the window, in the Goblet of Fire one there was a Daily Prophet with an article about the Quidditch World Cup and in the Halfblood Prince one there were Quibblers, Harry’s potions book, a Pygmypuff and on the window was the loveheart from Lavender. After that we drank some butterbeer and then saw the Knight Bus, Hagrid’s/Sirius’s Motorbike, the flying car and some of the giant chess pieces as well as Privet Drive and the Hogwarts Bridge (which Seamus and Neville let explode in the last movie).

Up next were a lot of creatures. We saw Goblin masks and wax figures of a lot of characters, Dobby, a mandrake that could actually move, as could a Monsterbook of Monsters and a very real looking Buckbeak. We also saw Aragog, the head of a Basilisk and the one of it’s skeleton, a model of a Hungarian Horntale and so much more before we went into Diagon Alley through which we could actually go and the light was set in a way that it would become day and night. All the shops looked really cool and in the window of Flourish and Blotts there were all the Lockhart books and an advertisement for Magical Me which are just details that I loved. Finally we saw a lot of smaller models for different sets and drawings of different scenes before in the last room we got to see the huge Hogwarts model. It was so wonderful and I could have looked at it for hours. In this room (just as in Diagon Alley) it became day and night and at night there would be lots of tiny lamps and it was super cool.

Finally we had to leave though, but in the shop I bought a necklace with the deathly hallows sign. I wanted a Hufflepuff scarf as well, but sadly they were out of stock. 😦 Maybe I will get one one day. One of my friends bought earrings with the sign of the ministry of magic on them and the other bought a Holyhead Harpies t-shirt and a big blanket with the Hogwrts sigil on it.

Oh and I almost forget to tell you about the passports we got. Usually they are for children, but we were allowed one each as well. You could collect stamps in them and answer questions nd stuff. They were really cool, but we just collected the stamps because we wanted to spend the time we had there looking at the sets and props and not answering questions, but I think for children it is a really cool thing.

London

So Miss Squishy and I are back from London and we had a wonderful trip! In order to keep these posts short enough to read, I’ll break our little holiday down into several of them as usual.

Miss Squishy and I left for the airport on thursday afternoon. We met with one of our friends, had some dinner and then got onto the plane.

When we arrived in London, it was raining and the piccadilly line was striking. That is why we had to take a bus into town, which took much longer but in the end even saved us money. After a ride on the bus and then the tube we finally arrived at our hostel, where our other friend was already waiting for us. The hostel was really nice. We absolutely enjoyed our stay there. The bathrooms and dorms were clean, it was not too noisy, there was breakfast and a bar and also it was not very far from the nearest tube station.

The next morning we went to the Harry Potter Studio Tour which I will do a seperate post about and afterwards we enjoyed the lovely weather outside. On sunday the weather was not quite so nice anymore. The rain started drizzling down all the time, but still we saw a lot of London and bought some souvenirs.

We’ve been to Westminster, to Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square, to Piccadilly Circus, Chinatown and Oxford Street.

On our last day we went to Hyde Park, because the weather was really nice in the morning, but once we got there it was very windy and suddenly a storm came down with hail and rain and we had to hide under the roof of a café.

After that we decided to find a place for lunch and wait there until it was time to go to the airport again.

It was a great time and both my friends and I enjoyed it very much!

London here I come!

All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go…

…because it is finally traveltime again and I am so so so excited!!! I haven’t been traveling for a long time now and can’t wait to get to the train station and the airport later. Miss Squishy and I will go to London with two friends and at the moment neither of us knows how to survive the day until it is finally time to leave (our flight is late in the evening).

I’ve packed most of the things for my suitcase, but still have to pack my handbag and have to decide how many notebooks and pens I should take. Also I’ve been extremely careful to pack everything that could possibly be described as a liquid (although it’s not really liquid) in my plastic bag, because I reckon the airport controls will be super harsh these days with what happened in Bruxelles.

I’ve also printed all the booking references for the flight and the hostel and the Harry Potter Studio Tour we’re going to do tomorrow (which I am incredibly excited for). Now I just have to check in for the flight tonight, pack the rest of my things, tidy my room and wait.

We wish you all a very happy Easter and hope that you enjoy the holidays!
